Session 1: 9:30 – 10:30 AM
Spirit & Law: The Church as an Instrument of Mediation and Peace
During tumultuous times, when society is divided, dialogue is contentious, and conflict emerges, when we face uninvited challenges daily, we must ask: Do we possess the skills needed to minister to a divided world? In this presentation we will bring together the spiritual values of the Church and Contemporary Conflict Resolution Models.
Session 2: 10:45 – 11:45 AM
Justice and Salvation
The role of justice in the context of our spiritual journey will be explored. We will discuss the need for conciliatory processes and collaborative law practices that establish a cultural ethic of caring for our brothers and sisters.
Session 3: Noon – 1 PM
What Happened?
Lawyers, mediators, and pastors all too often process client complaints through professional filters. We fail to understand the lived experience of the client. In this session we explore the use of narratives and elements of classical drama in assessing conflict.
Session 4: 2:30 – 3:30 PM
Adversarial versus Collaborative Law
Collaborative Law Attorney Jim Hallett joins Greg Stone in a discussion of alternative dispute resolution. Conciliatory processes are proven to work in the court setting. Is it possible to more fully integrate conciliatory processes into canon law practice? Using mediation to foster apology, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
Liturgy – Sunday Eucharist 4 – 5 PM
Sunday, March 4th 2012
Session 5: 9:30 – 10:30 AM
Spiritual Needs – The Second Pyramid
In mediation we go “below the line” to unearth core interests but we often fail to address spiritual needs. We introduce a heuristic model, a spiritual needs pyramid, to augment the well known human needs pyramid created by Maslow.
Session 6: 10:45 – 11:45 AM
The Art of Managing Deception
Litigation style discovery used to impeach an opposing party escalates conflict. Mediation can be more reliable in uncovering deception and reestablishing trust.
Session 7: Noon – 1 PM
Spiritual Direction in Conflict Resolution Part I
Conflict impedes our spiritual journey. Thus, a mediator may seek the assistance of a spiritual director. We explore how priests and deacons trained in conflict resolution might become valuable partners for lawyers and mediators.
Excursion: 3:00 – 7 PM
Excursion
Contemplative hike. We will travel by bus to this picturesque area near Las Vegas. Bring a daypack, water and a snack. Additional fee required.

Session 8: 9:30 – 10:30 AM
Spiritual Direction in Conflict Resolution Part II
Franciscan spirituality will aid our search for a style of spiritual direction that incorporates conflict resolution into the faith journey.
Session 9: 10:45 – 11:45
The Face of a Franciscan
Pope Benedict XVI writes, “To evangelize means: to show this path [to happiness]—to teach the art of living.” Saint Francis remains an exemplary model for such evangelization. Is the most effective evangelization making peace?
Session 10: 1:30 – 2:45 PM
The Destructive Third Party
Does “it take two to tangle”? Often the magic number is three. A destructive third party often choreographs the fight between Party One and Party Two. We explore practical ways to uncover this covert driver of conflict.
